Janeil Engelstad’s project, Voices From the Center grew out of a series of conversations that she had with people, while living in Central Europe, about the differences in their lives before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the threewalls Engelstad invited emerging Central European artists to respond to the project themes. Some of the artists created new work and others presented work produced outside of the exhibition. Engelstad worked closely with the artists as they developed and created their work, which in turn helped to shape her own installation.

Her installation at threewalls also included new interviews with Central Europeans who immigrated to Chicago about how they perceive the differences between their homelands and the United States. Excerpts from all of the interviews were used as the foundation for an installation that also included a timeline, portraits of the participants, and other images and fragments of text.

The exhibiiton included a panel discussion with the artists, moderated by Englestad, at the Graham Foundation. Video of the talk can be seen at: vimeo.com/32390556
