A project and exhibition that investigated sustainable and off-the-gid living in Texas produced for The Reading Room in Dallas. The gallery is located across the street from the Texas State fairgrounds. Thus, every fall, for three weeks, the neighborhood is transformed as over 100,000 people attend The State Fair of Texas, a mainstream showcase for conventional agriculture, crafts, and livestock. The narrative that the fair presents about Texas farmers and ranchers is a partial one however, for it leaves out the stories of organic farmers, holostic ranchers and people who are living sustainable lives, off-the-grid. The Y’UTOPIAS exibition included photographs, video and text from Engelstad’s interviews with farmers, ranchers and people living off-the-grid, miles away from commerical development. Like any good state fair, Y’UTOPIAS had demonstrations, including a worm farm that Engelstad designed and constructed out of reclaimed wood and workshops by raw and vegan chefs and food activitists.
