Back Home: Reflection on My Residence at the Institute of Innovation and Global Engagement

Talk

What if modernism had been characterized by evolving, interconnected and multi-sensory images – rather than by the monolithic objects often described by its artists and theorists? What if this were the origin of the digital image in art?

Marking the fiftieth anniversary of E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology), founder of Make Art with Purpose (MAP) Janeil Engelstad and author Charissa Terranova will discuss the deep roots of the computational light-image, or the digital image now ubiquitous on the internet, within the life sciences and its connection to art.E.A.T. was an avant-garde collaboration between artists, scientists, and engineers – including Billy Klüver, Fred Waldhauer, Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton and Yvonne Rainer – that started in 1966 around the seminal series of performances 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering at the Armory in NY.
